This one didn't fit.

When you do choose to build a boat that doesn't fit in your van (see previous post...) this kind of thing has to happen. This is the very beautiful 'Kamala'. Mikey (my partner) designed and built Kamala. It is 22ft long and is part of the reason I fell in love with him. This is Kamala being taken on a truck back to the water after coming out for some work. Whole other story but we had melted 750kg of lead in a bathtub over a big fire and made a new bit of lead keel. It's OK, we did wear respirators...and gloves...except for Al who couldn't resist running his hands through all that lead shot.

You can always borrow a bigger van, I suppose. It is when it is bigger than your doorway that you really have problems!

That sounds like a lot of lead! Do you just paste it onto the keel, or do you have to shape it?

Hi Jonathan,

With the lead you make a mould that's the right shape. Melt all the lead in a bath over a big fire, let the lead run/gush into the mould and leave it to cool for a few days. Then you drill a few holes through the bottom of the boat and through the lead and bolt it on. Maybe I will put some pictures in my blog at some point...yes, it is a LOT of lead.
